According to the Fairtrade Foundation, £34m of Fairtrade Chocolate was sold in UK in 2007. With large multi-nationals such as Sainsbury, Marks & Spencer, Selfridges and Waitrose offering a number of Fairtrade Chocolate products to the mass market, this figure seems to rise further in the coming years.
The process of picking cocoa beans is an intense one, as it takes more than 400 pods of cocoa to make just one pound of chocolate. Then, when you consider that, for example, 40% of Ghana’s export revenue comes from selling its cocoa, you start to see how reliant these developing countries are on trade of a single product to developed countries.
Like coffee farmers, cocoa producers are incredibly vulnerable to fluctuations in the market price. So, by signing up to the Fairtrade mark, farmers can ensure a more consistent flow of income and plan properly for the future.
