Our recent adventure in Peru took Richard and I deep into the lush landscape of La Concepción, where we had the privilege of staying with a local family and learning firsthand about the process of organic cocoa farming. Organized by the wonderful team at Coclatours, our guide Omar and driver Sebastian led us through a truly immersive experience.
The Journey Begins: Huayopata & The Andes
Our day started with an early morning drive through the breathtaking Andes, passing by the towering Abra Malaga at 14,160 feet. Along the way, alpacas grazed peacefully on the mountainsides, setting the scene for the awe-inspiring views we would enjoy throughout the day. Omar, our knowledgeable guide, shared fascinating insights about the region, its history, and the significance of farming to the local communities.
A Warm Welcome at Julia & Jose’s Farm
By noon, we arrived at Julia and Jose’s family farm, nestled in the vibrant greenery of the high jungle. Their warmth and hospitality were immediate, greeting us with open arms and a delicious lunch made from fresh, locally grown ingredients. The flavors of Peru truly came to life in every bite.
Exploring the Cocoa Farm
In the afternoon, José gave us a full tour of the farm, showing us the wide variety of crops they cultivate, from cocoa and avocados to bananas and papayas. We were amazed by how everything grows so freely here. We even had the chance to taste some seasonal fruits straight from the trees!
José also shared how the family sells their cocoa and chocolate in a variety of ways—locally, directly to customers, and through a cooperative that helps connect them to wider markets. It was fascinating to learn how these different channels help support their livelihood and sustain the farm.
Evening Chats and Organic Farming
As evening fell, we spent time with the family, chatting and learning more about life on the farm. They spoke passionately about the importance of organic farming, not only for their family but for the land and their community. It was clear that organic practices are at the heart of everything they do, helping them grow healthier crops and contribute to a more sustainable future.
An Overnight Stay in Paradise
After a wonderful evening filled with laughter and stories, we settled in for the night at the farm. The peaceful surroundings made for a fabulous sleep, only to be woken early by the gentle calls of the farm animals. It was the perfect way to start the day, feeling fully immersed in the rhythms of life on the farm.
Making Artisanal Chocolate
One of the most memorable parts of our visit was harvesting our own cocoa pods and participating in the chocolate-making process. We followed each step—from harvesting and fermenting the seeds, to drying and roasting them, and finally grinding them into a smooth paste. The end result? A fresh, delicious handmade chocolate, rich with flavour and the perfect with strawberries, bananas, when combined with ginger, pistachio and more.
What We Learned: Sustainability and Community
Beyond the technical aspects of cocoa production, we also had the opportunity to dive into the social and economic side of farming. Julia and José are part of a cooperative that sells their cocoa locally and abroad. They shared their experiences with Fairtrade and organic certification, and how these initiatives support sustainable farming practices and help improve the livelihoods of farmers like them.
A Heartfelt Goodbye
As our stay came to a close, we gathered with the family for a final meal, sharing stories and laughs over delicious, homemade food. Their hospitality was beyond words, making us feel like we were part of their extended family. We left with full hearts (and bellies!), feeling incredibly grateful for the experience.
A huge thank you to Coclatours for organizing such an incredible stay, and to Julia, José, and their lovely nieces for their generosity and kindness. This was truly a day (and night!) we will never forget.
