Coffee FAQ
We regularly benchmark our prices against both national and regional suppliers to ensure we remain competitive. Our aim is not to be the cheapest provider, but to offer the best overall value through speciality-grade coffee, ethical sourcing, sustainability credentials, expert machine support and consistent quality. While there will always be lower-cost alternatives, these are rarely comparable in bean quality, traceability, roasting standards, customer support or sustainability credentials.
Coffee prices have increased globally due to climate change, poor harvests, rising shipping costs, labour shortages and growing worldwide demand. We also choose to source higher-quality coffees, pay sustainable prices to producers and maintain recognised ethical certifications. While these factors increase cost, they help deliver a better cup of coffee and a more resilient, sustainable supply chain.
Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. All Roast & Ground coffees are Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance certified, and we are a certified B Corp, demonstrating our commitment to high standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. We continually review our sourcing, packaging and supply chain practices to reduce environmental impact, support coffee-growing communities and drive continuous improvement across our business.
We believe good coffee should have a positive impact beyond the cup. Roast & Ground proudly supports Only A Pavement Away, a charity helping people facing homelessness, prison leavers and veterans find employment within hospitality. For every pack of Fuel Their Day sold, customers donate 25p to the charity and Roast & Ground matches that donation, contributing a total of 50p per pack.
We also support the Marine Conservation Society through our Help 4 Kelp initiative, helping to restore and protect vital marine habitats including kelp forests, seagrass meadows, native oysters and blue mussels. These important ecosystems support biodiversity, coastal resilience and natural carbon capture. Find out more at https://www.roastandground.co.uk/csr-values.
Rather than comparing ourselves to a particular coffee chain, we focus on sourcing speciality-grade coffees that deliver exceptional flavour, consistency and traceability. Our coffees are ethically sourced, freshly roasted in the UK and carefully selected to perform beautifully in workplace environments. If you enjoy a lighter, easy-drinking style similar to a typical house roast, we would recommend Pick Me Up or Washed Bourbon as a great place to start.
The varietals used vary by coffee. For example, Pick Me Up is a 100% Arabica coffee from Colombia, featuring Bourbon, Castillo, Caturra and Typica varietals. We select varietals based on the flavour profile, consistency and character we want each coffee to deliver, with different coffees using different combinations of origins and varietals.
Roast & Ground coffees are carefully selected, roasted and blended to work perfectly with the coffee machines we supply. This ensures optimum extraction, excellent taste consistency, reliable machine performance and reduced maintenance issues. Our engineers calibrate every machine specifically for the coffee being served, helping you achieve the best possible result in every cup.
The cost per drink varies depending on the coffee selected, beverage size and recipe settings. Factors such as coffee dose, taste preferences and dispense speed can all influence the final cost. As a guide, the coffee cost for a double espresso is typically between 16p and 31p, while a fresh milk latte ranges from 20p to 34p. Compared to high street coffee prices, quality workplace coffee offers exceptional value, making it one of the most appreciated and cost-effective employee benefits.
Our coffees are sourced from leading coffee-growing regions including Central America, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Sumatra, Ethiopia and India. We favour farms and producer groups that can consistently deliver exceptional quality while meeting high ethical and sustainability standards.
We offer both. Single-origin coffees showcase the unique characteristics of a specific region or farm, while blends allow us to create balanced, complex and consistent flavour profiles throughout the year.

Yes. All Roast & Ground coffees are freshly roasted in the UK and supplied as fresh as possible to maximise flavour, aroma and crema. We encourage customers to order little and often, ideally at least monthly, to ensure their coffee is always enjoyed at its best.
It's worth noting that freshly roasted coffee benefits from a short resting period after roasting to allow the beans to naturally release gases and develop their full flavour profile. How coffee is stored and used also plays an important role in maintaining freshness. Once a bag is opened, the coffee begins to lose its freshness, so we recommend filling bean hoppers or canisters daily and keeping any part-used bags securely sealed between use.
Consistency is at our core. Every coffee we source undergoes rigorous quality control checks, including defect analysis, moisture testing, sample roasting and professional cupping before it is approved for production. Our experienced roasting team carefully monitors every batch to ensure it meets our exact standards for flavour, aroma and roast profile. Finished coffees are subject to further quality assurance checks before despatch, giving our customers confidence that every bag delivers the same great taste and performance, time after time.
Yes. Sustainability and ethical sourcing are central to our coffee programme. Every Roast & Ground coffee is Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance certified, supporting farming practices that protect the environment and help improve livelihoods within coffee-growing communities. We work with trusted supply partners to source high-quality coffees on ethical and sustainable terms, with full traceability throughout the supply chain. As a certified B Corp, we are also committed to maintaining high standards of social and environmental responsibility in everything we do.
Great coffee starts with great roasting. Our coffees are roasted in small batches using carefully developed roast profiles that bring out the unique character of each bean. Every batch is monitored for colour, flavour and quality, with samples assessed by qualified coffee professionals before being approved for production. We combine advanced roasting technology with decades of roasting expertise to deliver the consistency, flavour and freshness our customers expect. Strict quality control checks are carried out throughout the process, ensuring every bag performs as intended in our coffee machines and delivers an exceptional cup, time after time.
Our coffees are roasted using energy-efficient equipment that uses recycled heat and catalytic carbon capture technology.

Our coffees are roasted to optimise flavour while maintaining excellent machine performance. Excessively oily beans can cause grinder and brewing issues, so our roast profiles are designed with both taste and reliability in mind. Regular cleaning and maintenance remain essential to ensuring consistent performance.
Yes. We are happy to arrange coffee tastings and product samples to help customers compare different coffees and select the right option for their business. Choosing the perfect coffee is about more than simply tasting the beans in isolation. The final result is influenced by factors such as the coffee machine, recipe settings, drink menu and brewing method. That's why, wherever possible, we recommend evaluating coffees in the environment where they will be served, ensuring the chosen blend delivers the flavour, consistency and performance you expect in every cup.
Yes. All Roast & Ground coffees are carefully selected, roasted and blended to perform perfectly in the coffee machines we supply. Our range has been developed and refined over more than 20 years, with each coffee tested to ensure excellent flavour, reliable machine performance and consistent results. Combined with our engineers' expert calibration and recipe optimisation, this ensures every machine is set up to get the very best from the coffee being served, delivering a great-tasting cup every time.
No, when used correctly. Our coffees are carefully selected and roasted to perform effectively in commercial bean-to-cup coffee machines. Regular cleaning is essential to maintain both machine performance and drink quality. When combined with correct machine calibration, operator care and planned preventative maintenance, our coffees deliver reliable operation, consistent performance and excellent cup quality day after day.
Crema is influenced by several factors, including bean varietal, freshness, roast profile, recipe settings and machine calibration. All Roast & Ground coffees can produce excellent crema when correctly set up, but Forza and Molten Toffee are particularly popular with customers looking for a rich, persistent crema and a fuller-bodied espresso experience.

Coffee is best enjoyed within several months of roasting, provided it is stored correctly. Once a bag is opened, exposure to oxygen begins a natural process that gradually reduces the coffee's flavour, aroma and freshness. For optimum taste and performance, we recommend using opened beans within 2 to 4 weeks.
How the coffee is handled day-to-day is just as important as its roast date. To maintain freshness, we recommend only filling bean hoppers or canisters with the amount of coffee likely to be used that day and keeping any remaining beans securely sealed in their original bag. This is particularly important ahead of weekends or periods of low usage. Leaving beans sitting in a hopper from Friday to Monday exposes them to air for longer than necessary, meaning the first coffees served after the weekend may not deliver the same flavour, aroma and crema as freshly loaded beans. By replenishing little and often, you can ensure every cup is served at its very best.
Yes. Whole bean coffee bags use one-way degassing valves that allow naturally occurring gases to escape while preventing oxygen from entering, helping preserve freshness for longer.
There are 5 simple steps to ensure beans stay as fresh as possible:
- Order beans regularly (we suggest at least monthly) to ensure you don’t have excess stock sitting around for too long
- Store coffee beans in a cool-ambient environment away from direct sunlight
- Don’t overfill hoppers to ensure bean freshness
- Keep open bags airtight by removing as much air as possible, rolling the pack up tightly and securing with a coffee bag clip and
- Keep open bags visible to ensure they are used up before a new bag is opened.
Yes. Roast & Ground has invested significantly in improving the sustainability of our coffee packaging. Our outer boxes are made from fully recyclable cardboard. Our ground coffee packaging is made from recyclable PP5 material, while our whole bean coffee packaging uses recyclable LDPE4 material, carefully selected to protect freshness, preserve flavour and maintain coffee quality.
We have worked hard to make recycling as straightforward as possible, as we know convenient recycling leads to higher participation and better environmental outcomes. Unfortunately, recycling facilities and collection schemes vary across the UK, meaning there is no single approach that works for every customer. In many areas, our packaging can be recycled through separated waste collections, while some customers may need to recycle their bags alongside other plastic packaging at supermarket collection points or local recycling facilities.
We encourage customers to check their local recycling guidance to ensure packaging is disposed of correctly, helping to maximise recycling rates while reducing waste.
Supermarket coffees are often sourced primarily to achieve a target price. Roast & Ground focuses on speciality-grade quality, ethical sourcing, sustainability certifications, traceability and fresh roasting. While this may cost more, it delivers a noticeably better experience in the cup.
Absolutely. Higher-quality beans, ethical sourcing, fresh roasting, expert machine calibration and exceptional customer support combine to provide outstanding value and a superior coffee experience.
Coffee subscription options are primarily designed for online and retail domestic customers, rather than in the b2b market that we operate in. For our business customers, we offer tailored pricing based on order volumes, consumption levels and service requirements. Your Account Manager will be happy to discuss the most appropriate commercial arrangement for your organisation and ensure you receive the best value for your coffee programme.
Yes. We can offer a range of coffee machine and coffee supply packages, depending on your requirements. Bundling coffee, equipment, service and maintenance can often provide the most cost-effective solution while ensuring the machine, coffee and support package are perfectly matched. Please speak to your Account Manager, who will be able to recommend the most suitable options for your business.
Our Pura Decaf is certified Organic by the Soil Association and Fairtrade certified. It also uses the Swiss Water Process, a natural, chemical-free decaffeination method. While most of our coffees are not organic, we offer a range of recognised sustainability certifications across our portfolio, including Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance and Organic options, allowing customers to choose the credentials that best align with their values and objectives.
Some coffees naturally have lower acidity than others, depending on their origin, processing method and roast profile. Customers looking for a smoother, more mellow cup often enjoy Forza, Revival and Pura Decaf, which are known for their balanced flavour and lower perceived acidity. City Roast is also a popular choice for those who prefer a rounded, easy-drinking coffee. By contrast, Pick Me Up offers a brighter, more vibrant flavour profile with more noticeable acidity and fruit notes.
It's worth remembering that brewing method and machine settings can also influence how acidity is perceived in the cup, and our team can help recommend the best coffee to suit your taste preferences.
Coffee itself is not classified as a major allergen, and our black coffees are suitable for vegans. However, speciality drinks containing milk, milk powders or other beverage ingredients may contain allergens. We offer a range of plant-based alternatives, including oat drink and oat drink powder, and other dairy-free options may be available depending on the machine and location.
For customers with specific dietary requirements or severe allergies, it is important to consider the risk of cross-contamination where multiple drink ingredients are dispensed through the same machine. In environments where allergens must be avoided entirely, a dedicated machine for allergen-free or plant-based drinks may be the most appropriate solution.

Yes. We support eco-friendly farming through Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certified supply chains, helping to encourage responsible land use, biodiversity protection, better farming practices and long-term sustainability within coffee-growing communities. We also choose supply partners who share our commitment to quality, traceability and environmental responsibility.
Beyond coffee sourcing, our Help 4 Kelp campaign with the Marine Conservation Society supports the protection and restoration of vital coastal habitats such as kelp forests, seagrass, native oysters and blue mussels. These ecosystems play an important role in marine biodiversity and carbon capture, so the campaign is another way we help customers choose coffee with a wider positive environmental impact.
Yes. We support Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance certified supply chains and have paid above Fairtrade minimum prices from the beginning. Fairtrade helps ensure coffee producers receive a fairer, more stable price for their crop, while also supporting community investment, better working conditions and more sustainable farming practices. This helps coffee-growing communities invest in their farms, businesses and futures.
We do not currently make a carbon-neutral claim for our coffee roasting process. Establishing and maintaining such a claim requires detailed measurement, independent verification and ongoing assessment of carbon emissions across operations and the wider supply chain.
Instead, we focus on partnering with suppliers who share our commitment to responsible and sustainable business practices. This principle extends across our sourcing, roasting, logistics and packaging partners. We look for organisations that are actively investing in environmental improvements, ethical practices and long-term sustainability rather than making claims that cannot be robustly substantiated.
Our roasting partner has invested in energy-efficient roasting technology designed to reduce environmental impact, including advanced emissions-reduction systems, renewable energy generation, energy-efficient lighting and waste reduction initiatives. Our approach is to drive meaningful environmental progress throughout our supply chain while remaining transparent about the claims we make and the standards we expect from the partners we choose to work with.
All our packaging is recyclable. Our outer boxes are made from fully recyclable cardboard. For coffee bags, please follow local recycling guidance for PP5 and LDPE4 materials.

This makes it quick and convenient to manage regular orders across multiple locations or departments. For larger customers, we can also help plan ordering schedules based on consumption patterns, ensuring stock levels are maintained while keeping your coffee as fresh as possible.
There is no minimum order quantity, however free delivery is available on orders over £100. Orders below this value are subject to a £8.75 delivery charge.
In practice, most customers find they comfortably reach the free delivery threshold when ordering coffee, consumables and cleaning products together. Many also use our online shop to create shopping lists and place larger, less frequent orders, making stock management easier while maximising delivery value. Our team is always happy to advise on the most practical order pattern based on your consumption levels and business needs.
